Our partner Francisco Peleteiro, an expert in maritime transport law, appeared on CNN International last Friday, April 17, to analyze the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to general vessel traffic—a measure announced by Iran in the context of the current truce.
During the interview, the legal and operational challenges within this conflict zone were addressed. Peleteiro highlighted the regulatory uncertainty stemming from the fact that neither Iran nor the United States are parties to the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention. Additionally, he analyzed the critical role of war risk insurance policies for the merchant fleet, underscoring the need for extreme caution and rigorous management of insurance coverage in light of the current volatile situation.
This appearance follows his previous intervention on the same network a month ago, where Peleteiro discussed the consequences derived from the closure of the Strait.
